Day 9

Sunday, June 25

Home    Back    Next

Sunday June 25, we drove 189 miles from Lynden, Washington N48 57.514 W122 25.397 to Cache Creek, British Columbia, N50 48.796 W121 19.608.

When we stopped at the Canadian border crossing, after checking our ID and car registration, the Border Guard asked if we were going to Mission Speedway. He recommended that we stop there, just across the river bridge. He said there were a lot of old trucks crossing the border going there, and he thought we might like it.

We did as he suggested and found the speedway. They were drag racing logging trucks. There was also a good display of old trucks in the infield.

These are great looking '50s trucks.

A spotless fourty year old logging truck pulls out.

This is the drag strip. They run the trucks between the concrete guardrails. In the foreground is the return road. We got there just as they were taking a break from racing.

This is an older International pickup truck.

This is an interesting looking truck.

This truck probably was made before power steering, seat belts or air conditioning.

The bulldog on the hood gives this truck away, it's a Mack. The truck and Patty were both made in 1951.

The Mission area of British Columbia is flat and mostly agriculture. This is a river delta we drove along on the way north out of the Mission area.

This is a 1975 picture of the same area, not much has changed.

Sign of Sumas Lake taken on 1975 trip.

Many roads follow the rivers up the mountains, and so do the trains. Seeing train tracks on one side of a river and the highway on the other is common.

This picture shows the winding river up the canyon. The road and train tracks are just as winding. This was a hot day, the temperature got to 100 F. I stopped and let the radiator and us cool down a couple of times.

Another picture from 1975 of the same sign. I don't see any changes to the topography.

A little white water here in the rapids, I am glad there are guard rails along the road.

While we we were walking around Cache Creek looking for a place to eat we saw this piece of jade. It was mined near Dease Lake. We will be going through Dease Lake later in the trip.

It was so hot here, there was no way we would sleep in the tent tonight, no matter how much the motel cost. A cool shower and the little wall air conditioner let us sleep. We were starting to get tired of the schedule, everyday, drive-drive-drive, maybe it was the heat that made us so tired. Tomorrow is another day, let's see how it goes.
