Day 1

1_camp_pattycamera0025.jpg (141841 bytes)Saturday, June 17th my wife, Patty and I started our Alaska trip by driving from Jamul (San Diego) California to Santa Barbara. The car ran fine. I did drive a little slower than usual as the new engine had not been broken-in yet. I also added some top end oil to the gas in order to lube the rings and valves.

After a great dinner in Goleta, with Patty's brother and his family, we drove up into the mountains north of Santa Barbara to Lake Cachuma, N34 34.634 W119 57.596  a Santa Barbara County Park, and camped for the night.

Day 2

Sunday June 18, we drove 342 miles from Lake Cachuma  N34 34.634 W119 57.596 in the Santa Barbara Mountains to Vacaville N38 21.760 W121 58.126 north of San Jose. In San Jose we visited with Patty's daughters soon to be in-laws. After a quick BBQ at their house we continued on to Vacaville, and got a motel room. The reason I decide to go to Vacaville to stay for the night, was to be past the Monday morning traffic into San Jose. This seemed to be a good idea as we did not have much traffic leaving Vacaville the next morning.

Day 3

3_shasta_city1_pat0042.jpg (104667 bytes)Monday June 19, we drove 301 miles from Vacaville California  N38 21.760 W121 58.126 to Klamath Falls Oregon  N42 12.860 W121 44.736 Driving north on California Interstate Highway 5 was uneventful. Shasta City was a nice side trip. We arrived in Klamath Falls before dark and set up camp at the KOA there.

Day 4

Tuesday June 20, we drove 295 miles from Klamath Falls  N42 12.860 W121 44.736  to The Dalles N45 36.162 W121 11.117  with a side trip to Crater Lake for lunch and a short rest.

As we were leaving Klamath Falls I noticed the alternator was not charging, I discovered a broken wire. We stopped at the Radio Shack to fix the wire. I bought a battery powered soldering gun. It was junk, and was placed in the garbage can after I picked up the pieces from the parking lot. The wires were twisted together and held until we got to The Dalles where better repairs were made.

When we stopped at Crater Lake we saw this group of Woody's. I may have had the oldest car there that day, but my car was not the only old Ford. This group was headed down to Pismo Beach on the California coast for a Woody meet, they were from Canada, Washington and Oregon.

We got a Hotel room in The Dales and had a good dinner in an old restaurant downtown.

Day 5

Wednesday June 21, we drove 213 miles from The Dalles, N45 36.162 W121 11.117  Oregon to Wenatchee, Washington  N47 25.5706 W120 19.4836

I saw this old truck behind a building just down the street from our Hotel. In the morning I went to look at it and noticed it was behind a building with a sign that read "Auto Electric". Remember, I broke an alternator wire back in Klamath Falls yesterday.

I went into the shop and sure enough, they had a complete wiring harness for the alternator. He said they kept some around for farmers that change their tractors from generators to alternators. I bought it, and in a few minutes I had the car back in good shape again. We arrived in Wenatchee in the afternoon and stayed with Patty's Uncle.

Day 6

Thursday June 22, we drove just a few miles to downtown Wenatchee and back. It is a nice town with restored old buildings and a great soda fountain.

Everyone gets their car in the picture, from left to right, Paul, Francis and Tom.

Day 7

Friday June 23, we drove 159 miles from Wenatchee N47 25.5706 W120 19.4836 to Silverdale Washington N47 39.253 W122 41.4063

The whole end of the Ferry boat opens up, and two lines of cars can load at the same time. This makes for quick loading.

The deck hand said it was easy, "just follow the car in front of you, and be sure to set your brake". We arrived in Silverdale in the late afternoon and stayed with Patty's cousin.

Day 8

Saturday June 24, we drove 142 miles from Silverdale N47 39.253 W122 41.4063  to Lynden N48 57.514 W122 25.397 which is near the Canadian port of entry at Sumas.

When it was time to leave, Patty and I said goodbye to Sheilah but could not find the kids, we found them pretending to hide in the car. They wanted to go along on the trip. That is Taryn driving, and Reid riding shotgun on the running board.

A perfect day for a ferry ride on Puget Sound.

We did not want to cross the border until tomorrow. We found another KOA in Lynden and camped for the night
